When I was a small boy probably aged between 9 and 12 years old I built some model aeroplanes and I don’t know what made me stop but I did until now 50 years later.
My Son is the one to blame for getting me back into model making following a visit to the RAF museum at Hendon in North West London, I just mentioned to him in the souvenir shop that I used to make model aeroplanes when I was a boy and I said to him that I had looked at the hobby again and I had thought about doing it again. It was few weeks later on Father’s Day I received from my Son a 1/72 scale model Airfix kit of The Lancaster B111 Dambuster.
The Lancaster kit has 272 parts and looked quite daunting to put together but it made me realise that if it was done properly it could be a very satisfying and rewarding hobby so I decided to give the hobby another go.
Back in the 70’s you had to go to a model shop or toy department of a large store to buy the models and modelling paints, cement , paint brushes etc although some local news agents stocked a limited range of kits and accessories.
Visiting the large store would mean a trip into my local town usually on the bus and taking all day shopping for supplies and kits etc and you would have to save your pocket money up to fund the hobby.
Nowadays with the advent of the internet it is so much easier to find and buy exactly what you need.
